Four-year-old boy killed by remnant of war in Maungdaw

A four-year-old child was killed in an explosion of a hand grenade in Wetkyein village in Maungdaw Township of Arakan State.

The victim is Maung Man Pin. The grenade accidently exploded while he was playing with it on the evening of 3 April, U Aung San, Wetkyein village administrator told the Development Media Group (DMG).

“He is playing with his friends in a place located about 100 feet from the house. He brought in a hand grenade when he returned home. That hand grenade exploded at home. I don’t know how he got it. He died on the spot. He got multiple wounds,” U Aung San said.

Due to the explosion, his right leg and hand were cut off. He died on the spot as he was seriously wounded, villagers said.

In October 2022, fighting took place between the Arakan Army (AA) and the military council in Wetkyein village. This generade is remnant of war, U Aung San said.

“Villagers are concerned about the deaths of children due to war remnants. Parents urge their children not to play with such an explosive remnant of war. Villagers need to be careful when they go outside,” a local from Wetkyein village said.

During the period from 26 November, 2022 to 4 May, 2023, the Arakan Army (AA) and the military council made a temporary ceasefire in Arakan State. During this period, seven people were killed and 14 others wounded due to the explosions of mines and war remnants, according to the list compiled by the Development Media Group (DMG).

Those killed are: one from Buthidaung Township, three from Maungdaw Township and one from Minbya Township while those wounded are: five from Buthidaung Township, four from Ponnagyun Township and one each from Maungdaw Township, MraukU Township, Ann Township, Kyauktaw Township and Rathaedaung Township.
