Talks with FPNCC members produce good results, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the AA says

September 20th, 2022

The members of the Federal Political Negotiation and Consultative Committee (FPNCC) led by the United Wa State Army (UWSA) held a talk in Panghsang controlled by Wa during this month.

Dr. Nyo Twan Awng, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Arakan Army (AA) said the meeting could produce good results although he did not reveal the results in detail.

“I can’t reveal the matters discussed at the meeting. I would like to reply to the question based on what we are doing as we arrived there,” said Dr. Nyo Twan Awng at the 5th press conference of the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army (ULA/AA) held on September 19th.

Currently, fighting between the military council and the AA is intensifying in Maungdaw Township in northern Arakan State and Paletwa Township of Chin State.

“The AA has seized the military camps. The military is conducting airstrikes. The AA’s meeting with the UWSA may discuss either coordination for peace talks with the military council or demands for army supplies like the FM 6 to counter the military’s airstrikes,” U Ye Tun, a political observer said.

The UWSA appointed the new leaders. Dr. Nyo Twan Awng, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the AA went to Mongla to meet the newly-appointed leaders. Then, he proceeded to the UWSA-controlled Panghsang to hold talks with seven members included in the FPNCC.

Coordination among the northern alliance is natural. There may be cooperation according to the military strategy, U Than Soe Naing, political analyst said.

“It has been a long time since the FPNCC members did not hold meetings. I went to Mongla to have more friendly relations with the newly-appointed UWSA leaders. We shared information and exchanged views with the members of the FPNCC. The move aims to further strengthen cooperation among the FPNCC members. This is a meeting which will bring a lot of benefits for the future,” Dr. Nyo Twan Awng said.

The FPNCC is formed with the UWSA, the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA), the National Democratic Alliance Army (NDAA) and the AA.
