One soldier wounded in an ambush in Hpakant

April 16th, 2022

A soldier of the military council was wounded in an ambush attack on a military vehicle in Hpakant Township of Kachin State, according to locals.

“As far as I know, the military vehicle was ambushed on its way back after doing shopping. The vehicle was completely destroyed. The military always uses the green Pajero. The soldiers are from No.14 Light Infantry Battalion under Division-33. The soldier got minor wounds to his neck and cheek,” a local said.

At around 7.30 am on April 15th, a military-owned Pajero loaded with three soldiers was ambushed by an unknown group in Namyar village after they bought the goods at the market.

After the ambush, the military council troops fired more than four rounds of heavy weapons into Namyar village, locals said.

“We don’t know which organization carried out this attack. There has been no such attack in the village,” a local added.

Since 2013, there have been no such attacks in the village. This is the first during over 10 years, locals said.

“I have never experienced such an attack before. Such attacks were reported there when the military columns were stationed in the village during the clashes with the Kachin Independence Army (KIA),” a local said.

After the attack, the military council met the town elders and urged them to make cooperation in the peace and tranquility of the region.

Namyar village has a population of more than 5,000. Not only Kachin ethnics and other ethnics are living in the village.

Namyar village is located on Myitkyina-Hpakant Road. It is a highway break for travellers to enjoy food.
