The entire village of Maung Mei Shaung in Dawei Township in Tanintharyi Region, was forced to flee after clashes broke out between the military junta and resistance forces near the Hpayarme checkpoint, according to displaced civilians.

Joint resistance forces attacked the Hpayarme checkpoint at around 6am on 2 May, where more than 30 junta soldiers were present.

The fighting lasted nearly an hour, although the number of casualties is not yet known.

During the fighting, the junta camp based in Zahar village provided artillery support. As a result, locals were forced to flee en masse fearing they would be hit by artillery fire.

According to the displaced people, the residents of Maung Mei Shaung had to temporarily relocate three miles away to Dawei town and nearby villages.

Also in late March too, clashes broke out between junta troops and People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) near Maung Mei Shaung village, forcing the entire village to flee.

The FE5 Tanintharyi, a research group, has reported that over 50,000 people have been displaced in Tanintharyi Region since March.
