Household list compiled in Taunggyi for military service

Local residents said that ward administrators will lead the collection of household lists for military service in Taunggyi of Shan State.

“Ward administrators will collect the lists of those eligible for military services through the household census. I have heard the collection of household lists begins in Seinpan, Shwetaung and Chanmyathazi wards in Taunggyi where military families are living. Some ward administrators don’t know what to do as they are fearful,” a local from Taunggyi said.

Under the People’s Military Service Law enforced by the military council, males between the ages of 18 and 35 and females between 18 and 27 can be drafted into the armed forces.

The military-appointed administrators, informed the public about military service in Kyaunggyisu ward in Taunggyi on 13 February (yesterday). The people aged 18 and above are urged to enroll their names at the ward office. The people who have youths are worried about military service. They don’t want to serve in the army, a 20-year-old woman said.

The training period for military service will be three months. The people will be called up for military service four times a year. A total of 20,000 people will be called up for military service per year.

According to the 2019 Interim Census, 14 million people — 6.3 million men and 7.7 million women are eligible for military service, the military council said.

The age range for males with specialist expertise is between 18 and 45 and 18 to 35 for females with specialist expertise.

The military service period is up to two years. During a state of emergency, the terms of military service can be extended for up to five years. Those ignoring summons to serve can be jailed for five years, according to the law.
