More than 1,400 people die in one year due to junta’s extrajudicial killings

U Aung Myo Min, Union Minister for Human Rights under the National Unity Government (NUG) said that in 2023, more than 1,400 civilians were killed due to extrajudicial killings by the military council.

Union Minister U Aung Myo Min said in a video statement on 11 January about human rights violations collected by the NUG’s Ministry of Human Rights.

“We have collected 304 cases of extrajudicial killings, the most common cause of death. Among them, 1,421 people were unjustly killed. Among the victims are 172 children under the age of 18. Infants and babies also died along with their mothers. Those aged over 60 and 70 were killed. There are also disabled people who were killed as they couldn’t run away.” U Aung Myo Min said.

The list announced by Union Minister U Aung Myo Min, is a list collected in 2023.

In addition, U Aung Myo Min added that in 2023, the military council massacred civilians 86 times.

“Another thing is that there were the massacres of five or more people in 2023. We can say that the intentional killing of five and more civilians at the same time is defined as mass killing. We recorded 86 massacres of five or more people in 2023. We found that the number of people killed in 86 times is 868, he said.

In 2023, the aerial attack on Pa Zi Gyi village was the worst of the massacres.

U Aung Myo Min said: “Among the mass killings, the incident in which 157 civilians, children and parents were killed by an air attack in Pa Zi Gyi village, is the one that killed a large number of people in 2023.

According to U Aung Myo Min, the type of human rights most committed by the military council in 2023 was extrajudicial killings.

Regarding the type of human rights violations involved in extrajudicial killings, U Aung Myo Min continued that during 2023, the type of human rights violations that took place the most was extrajudicial killings. Extrajudicial killings include targeted aerial attacks on civilians, targeted heavy shelling and killing everyone without any reason, killing of the displaced persons and the killings after being abducted.”

Following the military coup on 1 February 2021, there have been continuous clashes between the military council and the revolutionary forces in the regions and states.

Human rights activists and local residents said that during the military conflict, local people are subjected to extrajudicial killings and various human rights violations by the military council.
