A couple was killed by the military council’s indiscriminate shelling in new Ohnkyaw village in Momeik Township of Shan State at around 3.30 pm on 12 January, according to residents.

A local man said: “The military council fired heavy shells on purpose. The heavy shell landed on the house of U Kyaukkhae and Daw Kyaw. The couple died on the spot. The shrapnel damaged another house.”

The shelling hit and destroyed the house, parking garage, rice storage warehouse and combined harvester owned by U Sam Swae in the village, according to locals.

On 11 January, the military council indiscriminately fired heavy shells into old and new Ohnkyaw villages. The shelling wounded a nine-year-old child and destroyed more than 10 civilian houses.

On 3 January, the heavy shell landed near an old brick Kiln in Myothit village in Moemeik Township and wounded two civilains. However, one female victim died while reciving medical treatement at the military hospital in Mandalay, local residents said.

Thanks to China’s mediation, the military council and the Three Brotherhood Alliance held a third round of meeting from 10 to 11 January in Kunming, China. They have reached a ” Haigeng Agreement” for a temporary ceasefire in northern Shan, but the fighting on the ground has not stopped, residents said.

Under the ” Haigeng Agreement”, the Three Brotherhood Alliance agreed not to launch offensive attacks on the military council’s camps and strategic hills in northern Shan State. In turn, the military council agreed not to attack all the places captured by the Three Brotherhood Alliance, with flights and heavy shells.

On 12 January, the day the Haigeng talks came into effect, the military council continued to fire with heavy weapons, according to the information department of the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA).
