Four people including woman killed in junta airstrike in Lashio’s Mongyaw

Four people, including a woman, were killed and another injured in airstrikes by the military council in the Mongyaw rural administrative area (known in Burmese as Mongyaw tike neh) in Lashio Township, Shan State.

At around 7pm on 7 January, the military bombed Mongyaw village with two fighter jets without any ground fighting in the area. The bombardment left four people killed, among them were a 50-year-old woman, and another injured, according to locals from Mongyaw.
“The jets came around 7pm yesterday and dropped bombs. The bombs landed in Zaytan Ward in Mongyaw. Four people were killed,” said a Mongyaw resident.

One man who was injured in the military airstrike was taken to Mongyaw station hospital. In addition, at least 20 houses were damaged or destroyed in the attack, according to locals.

“Many houses were destroyed in Zaytan Ward. The houses around the bombing sites were completely destroyed. There was no fighting yesterday, the jets just came and dropped bombs three times. At least 20 houses were damaged or destroyed,” the woman from Mongyaw village continued.

Also on 2 December last year, the military bombed Long Tway village in Mongyaw rural administrative area, killing two women, injuring people and damaging or destroying at least ten houses, according to locals from Mongyaw.

In the two and a half months since “Operation 1027”, 22 people, including 13 women and one child, have been killed and at least 30 others injured in Lasio Township, according to Lasio residents.
