Heavy shelling wounds a child in Paletwa

A seven-year-old child was severely wounded by the explosion of a heavy shell which landed in the compound of the people’s hospital in Paletwa Township of Chin State, according to local residents.

The heavy shell fired by Paletwa-based Light Infantry Battalion (LIB)-289 landed and exploded in the staff housing near the hospital in Myoma ward at around 11 am on 8 December, according to locals from Paletwa.

A youth from Paletwa said: “Heavy shell landed on the staff housing in the compound of the hospital. The shelling blew the roof of the staff housing off. LIB-289 fired heavy shells to the conflict-affected area. The heavy shell landed downtown.”

A local from Paletwa said: “A RPG landed. It landed on the staff housing in the west of the hospital. I am worried as the heavy shell landed in the town. In the past, there was no such thing in the town.”

Half an hour later, the Palatwa-based LIB-289 was firing heavy weapons before a heavy shell landed and exploded in Paletwa Township Public Hospital. Residents said that after the weapon exploded inside the hospital compound, the gunfire stopped.

On 4 December, the Arakan Army (AA) captured the Taronai strategic hill in Paletwa Township. The AA continues its offensive in order to capture another strategic hill, the Nonebyu strategic hill. Local residents say that they can hear the sounds of heavy shells and aerial bombardment even from downtown Paletwa.
