Two IDPs die from snakebite in Kanbalu District in August

There were 11 snakebite victims in Kanbalu District in Sagaing Region in late August. Two people including a 14-year-old child died from snakebite, according to locals and the Kyunhla-Kanbalu Activists Group.

Two persons who died from snakebite are a 26-year-old man and a 14-year-old boy. Maung Paing Phone Khant was found dead in the forest, the Activists Group said.

From 2021 to August 2023, there were more than 100 snakebite victims in Kanbalu District. Most of them are the IDPs, according to the Activists Group.

An official of the Kyunhla-Kanbalu Activists Group said: “We have stored snakebite medicine sufficiently. However, we are in need of long boots in addition to anti-venom.”

ÒThere are around 30,000 permanent IDPs in Kanbalu District. Locals frequently face the military council’s offensives and the burning of villages. The military is carrying out offensives in the southern part of Kanbalu. The people from more than 15 villages have fled to safety,” the IDPs and the persons helping the IDPs said.

On 5 September, the military council force conducted offensives in Layhla village and the villages in Htankone station in Kanbalu Township and burned down civilian houses, according to the statement by the Activists Group.
