Some Myanmar nationals, including weavers arrested in Manipur state, will be released by India in the coming days, according to the persons helping them.

“It is expected to happen in a few days. The families who were arrested when they came from Kalay and Anyar to India to do weaving will be freed. They will be transferred via Tamu- Moreh border,” a person helping the detainees said via email.

He went on to say that there are nearly 100 weavers from central Myanmar who were arrested in early 2023 in the Indian state of Manipur, and the number who will be released is unknown.

According to those helping, there are more than 210 Myanmar nationals who have been arrested for illegally entering the country in Manipur state and are being held in Sajiwa jail in Imphal.

As a result of the fighting in July last year, more than 700 Myanmar nationals from the Tamu township of the India-Myanmar border fled to Chandel district of the Indian state of Manipur, and the Indian government ordered them to return home immediately.

According to some Indian news, more than 5,000 Myanmar nationals fled to the Indian state of Manipur and more than 35,000 to the state of Mizoram after the military coup.
