Ten junta soldiers were killed in a surprise attack on a military force with the strength of nearly 40 soldiers stationed at the monastery in Chaungnyiko village in Tanintharyi Township of Tanintharyi Region at around 2 pm on 6 June, according to officials of the Tanintharyi People’s Defense Force (PDF).

Two PDF members got minor wounds in the battle which lasted over one hour, an official of Tanintharyi PDF said.

Thousands of locals from Chaungnyiko, Banlamwait, Nyaungbinkone and Runpho villages have fled to safer places.

Tensions mounted as military council soldiers, which continued to be stationed at the monastery till the morning of 7 June, constantly fired heavy shells into the villages, locals said.

The surprise attack was jointly carried out by the Peacock Special Column, the KTLA-TCJF, Tanintharyi Yoma combined force, Impartial Guerrilla Force and the Southern Warriors Defence Force (SWDF).

There are frequent clashes between the military council army and the combined revolutionary force in Tanintharyi Township where martial law is imposed. Some areas have been relinquished by the military council.
