Six people were injured when an explosion occurred at the Internal Revenue Department’s tax office on Pansodan Road in Kyauktada Township in downtown Yangon at around 12 noon on 5 June. All were immediately taken to the hospital, according to sources close to the department.

“They said it exploded near a chair outside the room. Four employees and two civilian visitors to the office were hit by shrapnel. They were all taken to the hospital. This is the brief account of the incident. Authorities have launched the investigation,” said a source from the office.

The explosion reportedly occurred near the steel chairs outside the office of the chief tax officer on the third floor, where guests usually wait.

Military-run channels confirmed the incident and said a female deputy chief of the office, three other staff members and two civilian visitors were hit by the shrapnel.

The explosion caused the tax office to close. Members of the junta have begun investigating the office, including checking employees and their cell phones.

Residents living near the department said the regime has tightened security in the area with patrol vehicles.

“Junta members in civilian and military uniforms arrived at the scene about 15 minutes after the blast. Earlier, an explosive device was found in front of the tax office in Pazundaung. But this time the explosion occurred inside the office. We also saw ambulances going there,” reported a man who lives near the office.

The number of bomb explosions has increased in Yangon since the military coup. In March, there were explosions in Pazundaung Township and an unexploded device was discovered at the corner of 49th Street and Mahabandoola Road.
