Regime carries out bombing with fighter jets in Chin State’s Mindat

The military council reportedly conducted airstrikes with fighter jets in Mindat Township, Chin State, around 11am on January 23, damaging homes and a monastery.

At about 11 am, junta fighter jets shot and dropped bombs over the houses and monastery, with no combat activity at that time. In addition to the bombing, the regime’s battalion stationed in Mindat also opened fire with howitzers around noon that day, according to the Mindat people’s administration information and data collection team.

The military council’s unprovoked airstrikes reportedly damaged two houses, a monastery and a ordination hall, and wounded some people with shell fragments.

The township’s people’s administration said the shelled and bombed monastery was housing civilian volunteers who were helping internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the township.

Dr. Ngai Tam Maung, Deputy Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management of the National Unity Government (NUG), said the people should be vigilant as the military council may carry out more airstrikes.

“They may conduct more airstrikes as their ground forces suffer heavy setbacks. It could be their last weapons, so people need to be extra careful to protect themselves from the junta’s attacks. The junta has used its airstrikes not only for armed combat, but also for monasteries, IDP shelters, clinics, and hospitals. So civilians need to think in advance about how to avoid this,” said Dr. Ngai Tam Maung.

The military council has carried out about eight airstrikes with fighter jets on the areas controlled by the ethnic armed force in Mindat this month, targeting innocent civilians, IDPs and military camps of Chinland Defense Force (CDF) – Mindat, according to CDF -Mindat.

According to CDF -Mindat, the regime conducted bombings twice around 11 pn on January 7, once around 8 am on January 8, twice around midnight on January 22, and three times around 11 am on January 23.

CDF-Mindat has asked the people in Mindat Towship to build bunkers with the prescribed dimensions near their houses and to beware of the military council’s air raids.
