Four civilians, pregnant woman injured by junta shelling in Loikaw

November 2, 2022

Four civilians, including a pregnant woman, were injured in Linhpongyi and Wanpang villages by explosions from artillery shells fired by military council troops on November 1, according to a person helping internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the area.

“Two from Linhpongyi are in critical condition. They are husband and wife. They have a child and the woman is also pregnant. She is due to give birth this month. Her husband was also covered in blood. So I think the couple is in critical condition,” she said.

Two other people from Wanpang village were hit in the legs, but their injuries were not serious. According to reports, 12 artillery shells of 120mm and 60mm landed and exploded in the village.
In addition, at least five houses in Linhpongyi and Wanpang villages were damaged by the military council’s artillery fire, it said.

“The two seriously injured were not hit by the first shell but by the second one when they took shelter behind a brick wall and not in their house,” said the person who helped the IDP.

It was reported that there was no fighting at the time of the artillery shelling by the military council troops. The seriously injured couple has a five-year-old son.

Linhpongyi and Wanpang villages have been hit by artillery fire before and some residents have currently taken refuge elsewhere.

In over a year until October, a total of 64 civilians were killed and nine died from fear of light and heavy weapons shelling in Karenni (Kayah) State, according to the Karenni Progressive People Force (PKPF).
