September 26th, 2022

On September 12th, the Pa-O National Defense Force (PNDF) attacked two military camps in Hsihseng Township in southern Shan State which is Pa-O self-administered zone as a first military operation.

The Than Lwin Times interviewed Khun Zaw Moe, an official of the PNDF about difficulties and challenges the PNDF faced during its operation and future processes.

Q: May I know the PNDF’s difficulties and challenges faced in the first military operation?

A: The first challenge our force faced is that we have to confront the public as it is in the Pa-O territory. Then, we have to confront the Pa-O National Organization (PNO). Confrontation with the PNO is a big pressure. We had to prepare for the military operation by taking account of the fact that it shall not become a social conflict. That’s why, we were under heavy pressure. Our battalions have not enough weapons even though we are advancing the frontline. However, we have earned the public’s support. Our force has regarded it as a success.

Q: How did the military council respond during the fighting?

A: The military mainly used heavy weapons when we attacked a camp. They (military) have a lot of fear. Two vehicles loaded with the PNO members arrived immediately when the military asked for help.

Q: How about the casualties on both sides?

A: One comrade was killed and some minor damages were caused in the fighting. Some members got minor injuries in the fighting. The military council suffered heavy casualties.

Q: What do you want to comment on the fact that the military deployed the military-backed PNO people’s militia force to help the military council?

A: We don’t want to confront our same races. We will attack the military council as a common enemy. We don’t want to ruin our ambition. We have to avoid confrontation when the PNO creates a conflict-like situation.

Q: Which message do you want to send to the PNO including the Pa-O people?

A: I would like to call on the public to continue to provide necessary weapons for us. I would like to request the PNO to avoid confrontation with the coalition and help us when the military conducts an offensive. We may attack the PNO if it cooperates with the military council.
