TNLA’s recruitment forces youths to flee in Kyaukme Township

September 20th, 2022

Local youths have fled to safer places as the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) is recruiting new members in Kyaukme Township in northern Shan State.

“They are a hilly village. They rent a house at No.2 mile hill in order that his son can attend the school. At around 8 pm on September 15th, the TNLA abducted the Grade-9 student as he is included in the list of new recruits. Now there are no youths left in the wards,” a woman from Kyaukme told the Shan News on condition of anonymity.

The detained student is from No.3 post-primary school. Teachers and parents have called on authorities to release him.

“Youths have fled to safer places and other countries as the TNLA is recruiting new soldiers at No.8 and No.9 wards in Kyaukmegyi village. There are only older men left in the village. The TNLA detained a man aged over 70 for three days. The TNLA released him after torture as his son was hiding. He died of internal wounds two days after being released while he was receiving treatment at a hospital,” a local man from Kyaukme said.

An official of the TNLA from Kyaukme Township told the Shan News that “I don’t know detailed information about it. The recruitment of new soldiers is done in accordance with the policy.
The Shan State Progress Party/Shan State Army (SSPP/SSA), the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), the TNLA and the military council are active in Kyaukme Township.
