During over one year of the military coup, the people have fled for their lives. They are unable to harvest their crops and have to take shelter in safer places. Most of the displaced locals are from the villages in Sagaing and Magway Regions which mainly rely on farming as well as from Chin State and Karenni State.
In the wake of the coup, an estimated number of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Myanmar has reached up to 800,000. The number of the IDPs is expected to increase, according to the UNHCR’s report. The IDPs no longer can rely on their staple crops. They are hoping for donations to the IDP camps. Crop losses and food security become the problem which arises during the Spring Revolution. In addition, the burning of empty houses, plantations, unharvested crops and harvested crops by the military council troops, may make the food security problem bigger.
The Myanmar Peace Monitor’s weekly news review for this week highlights food sufficiency and the military council’s burning of crops.
