November 26th, 2021

The military council’s troops abducted and killed a 56-year-old Kachin national from Mawtaung village in Muse Township in northern Shan State on the morning of November 22nd, according to the victim’s family.

The victim is U Laphine Tu Lwan with a hearing loss in one ear. He lived on the hill near the village. He got arrested when he descended the hill. The victim was shot dead and buried in the maize plantation, according to locals.

A local said: “We asked the Myoma People’s Militia about the victim. We also asked Military Division-99 about him three times as we heard the news about the fighting between the Division-99 and the People’s Defence Force (PDF). But the Division denied it. But the next time, the military admitted that a man with a gun descending the hill was shot dead. In fact, he carried a sword and a bag. He put his mobile phone in the bag. He did not carry any gun. The body of the victim was recovered on November 23rd as the Division-99 showed the place where the victim was buried. The military changed his clothes with the PDF uniform. The body covered with maize plants was found in the one-feet depth ground. We will not find him if we don’t make an inquiry.”

On November 22nd, fighting took place between the Division-99 under the military council and the People’s Defence Force (PDF) near Mawtaung village for about 30 minutes. Then, the military council’s troops arrested ten civilians. The next day, the military council released nine detainees, according to locals.

This is the first case in Mawtaung village. Locals are worrying as they regularly hear the news about the military council’s arrests and killings of civilians across the country.
