Mon Student Unions Call NMSP For Not Joining Military Council

2 June 2021

Twelve student unions based in Mon State are calling the New Mon State Party (NMSP) not to collaborate Military Council through an open letter dated on June 1 including 5-point statement.

The students urged NMSP not to make negotiation and collaboration with Military Council, which has been arresting and killing the people every day. And NMSP was called for making an official announcement before the whole country and to the international community on “its firm standing with Myanmar people”.

Moreover, the students requested NMSP to proclaim its targeted future roadmap and to protect with its ultimate effort those fighting against military dictatorship.

Their open letter includes “to help and care as best as possible for the interests of various ethnic groups throughout the country whilst forwarding to a federal union.”

The student unions added that they hoped the New Mon State Party (NMSP) would consider their request with a deep concern. Then they declared that they would work for the success of the revolution and promised that they would support any organizations that stand with the public.

However, Naing Aung Ma Ngae, Responsible person at NMSP’s Central Political Department, replied with Mon language at an online forum that NMSP would not object the participation of Mon leaders in the National Unity Government and on the other hand, NMSP as an NCA-signatory party had certain things left to be taken seriously.

New Mon State Party (NMSP) is an ethnic armed organization that had signed the NCA agreement and appeared in the meeting held under the leadership of General Yar Pyae in Naypyidaw after the coup.
