“ASEAN countries in the Global Women’s Peace and Security (WPS) Index…”

Insecurity Insight based in Geneva of Switzerland, a research group on armed violence, has listed Myanmar as the second most affected country in the health sector in the world. According to the list collected by the Insecurity Insight, during the three years of the military coup in Myanmar, nearly 1,300 attacks targeted hospitals, clinics, patients and healthcare workers. According to the list, 348 hospitals were destroyed while 118 health workers were killed and 133, injured. 1

In the 2024 Index released by France-based Reporters Without Borders (RSF), Myanmar continues to be among the 10 worst countries for press freedom. The index was released on World Press Freedom Day, which falls on 3 May. Myanmar ranks 171st out of 180 countries. 2

Myanmar ranks at the bottom of the ASEAN countries in the Global Women’s Peace and Security (WPS) Index, which measures women’s inclusion, justice and security. The Index is published by the Georgetown University based in Washington, D.C. and with support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The index was compiled by researchers, about women from 170 countries ranging from women’s employment and education regulations to violence and safety.

In the ASEAN countries, Singapore tops the list, with Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam and Laos are among the top five countries. 3

In the 2024 annual report released by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on 1 May, Myanmar is designated as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC), along with 16 countries, for severe violations of religious freedom. 4
