Junta-appointed ward/village administrators and 100-household heads in Zalun Township of Ayeyarwady Region have submitted their resignation letters en masse as the military council forces them to attend military training, some families of ward/village administrators and 100-household heads said.

A total of 62 ward/village administrators and 100-household heads in Zalun Township of Ayeyarwady Region, submitted their resignation letters to the township administration council in the first week of January as they did not want to attend military training, according to some persons close to the township administration council.

“They submit their resignation letters, giving various reasons. Most of them quit their jobs citing health reasons. The township administrative body can’t allow them to resign and has to forward their resignation letters to the above. The military council doesn’t allow them to resign easily, even one or two administrators. They may even be prosecuted for rebellion,” a person close to the township administrative body said.

The directive to attend military training in the second week of January has been temporarily suspended since the mass resignation, ward/village administrators said.

A 100-household head said: “The township administrative body has given incentives that it will provide them with a monthly cash assistance of 300,000 MMK and some small arms after a two-week military training.”

In November and December last year, more than 30 100-household heads from Zalun Township resigned from their jobs as the township administrative body forced them to attend a two-week military training, according to a person close to the township administrative body.

ÒSome people who want to be the administrators and 100-household heads under the military council give bribes. They aim to earn dirty money in the bad era by oppressing the public. Now they have come home to roost and run away,” a local from Zalun said.

Similarly, in December last year, 45 ward/village administrators submitted their resignation letters to the township administration council in Hinthada Township as they did not want to attend military training.

In Ayeyarwady Region, ward/village administrators and 100-household heads under the military council are pro-military supporters, military and police informants.

Local residents say that they are only people who are seeking their own interests by oppressing and threatening the locals.
