The military council’s navy shelled Letku village in Palaw Township, Tanintharyi Region, killing one resident and injuring four others, according to residents and local defense forces.

Around 10 am on 9 September, a junta vessel anchored at the mouth of Palaw Creek fired artillery shells at Letku, Myadaung, and Pyinbyu villages, with no fighting at the time.

The shells landed and exploded in and around Letku village, killing a 25-year-old local man on the spot and injuring four others, including a four-year-old child, according to residents and local defense forces.

The sources said the junta’s indiscriminate artillery fire frightened the villagers and caused them to prepare to flee.

There was also reportedly a clash between the junta’s navy and local defense forces in the sea off Myinauk Island in Palaw Township on 7 September.

Also in August, a 76-year-old woman named Daw Than Kyi was fatally shot by junta artillery fire on Letku village.
