Background of USIP
The United States Institute of Peace (USIP) was established by Congress in 1984 as an independent, federally-funded national security institution devoted to the nonviolent prevention and mitigation of deadly conflict abroad.

USIP – Myanmar
USIP has been working in Burma since January 2012. Having proven itself a reliable and principled partner to the rule of law community, USIP will help coordinate a Justice and Security Dialogue (JSD) project in the country. Looking forward, the Burma Program will expand upon the initial JSD outcomes, addressing needs and issues in terms of strengthening justice and security through dialogue and joint problem solving.
USIP has also been engaged in inter-ethnic and religious peacebuilding efforts and has established a locally trusted, well-connected, and dependable network of contacts that help cultivate and support tolerance and mutual understanding. This network has also been active in monitoring and responding to rumors that feed inter-religious tensions, preventing the outbreak of communal violence, and, when these clashes do take place, advancing humanitarian support and reconciliation in their aftermath.
In addition, planning is underway to utilize local PeaceTech Labs to leverage innovative technology for peacebuilding. The exercise itself is an opportunity for collaboration and relationship building, which USIP will follow up with trainings or networking, based on the outcome of the Lab. Domestically and in country, USIP continues to provide training on governance; peacebuilding; rule of law; land, property and conflict; and conflict analysis through the Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding.
