Since the military coup, the UWSP/UWSA engagement with the military junta has been stronger than that of any other ethnic armed resistance organization. During “Operation 1027” of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, UWSA troops entered and occupied the towns of Hopang and Panlong on 5 January 2024, as the military junta was on the verge of losing them.

On 10 January 2024, the military junta officially handed over these two towns, which are part of the Wa Self-Administered Division under the 2008 Constitution, to the Wa State People’s Government of the UWSP/UWSA. During “Operation 1027,” the UWSP/UWSA managed to gain control of these two towns from the junta without firing a single shot.

On 29 July 2024, the UWSP/UWSA released a statement on the situation in Myanmar, stating that it has decided on a non-aligned policy of not participating in or instigating military conflicts with any organization, for the benefit of all ethnic groups in Wa State. The UWSP/UWSA has urged for a peaceful resolution, including dialogue, to ensure the economic recovery of the people affected by the conflicts in Wa State and throughout Myanmar, including northern Shan State, and to guarantee the safe return of those who have been displaced.
