The military council is carrying out frequent arrests of locals in Gwa Township in Arakan State, with more than 10 locals arrested.

On 6 August, military council members enforcing security in Ywa Thit Kone village arrested seven underage children while checking pedestrians.

“They checked all passersby, ordered them to kneel down, and asked if the AA had entered the village. They also beat them with guns. Those arrested are about 16 years old,” says a news source.

Between 1 and 4 August, the military arrested six locals in Gant Gaw Taung village in Gwa Township.

A local said, “A group of six military council soldiers and a village administrator took them from their homes, saying they needed to check something. Their families have since lost contact with them.”

The military council force arrested U Pauk Kyaing, U Aung Gyi, Ko Zin Min Htet, U Than Hlaing Htay, Daw Mya Mya and an unidentified man, at their homes.

Currently, the military council is deploying troops and weapons, conducting military preparations, tightening security and inspections, and making arrests in Gwa Township. As a result, some locals have fled to the Ayeyawaddy and Yangon Regions.

“The remaining people here live in fear of potential fighting and are also afraid of being arrested,” a local from Gwa said.

Many IDPs from Thandwe are seeking refuge in Gwa Township, where locals face difficulties due to travel bans and restrictions on carrying rations.
