Founded – 10 January 1973, 1987, 1997, April 2008

Headquarters – Loilam, Mong Hsat District, Shan State

Original LDU – Led by Chairman Kyar Khun Sar and Vice Chairman Kyar Har.

New LDU – Led by Chairman Kyar Solomon and Vice Chairman Kyar Phu

The military junta’s invitation for peace talks caused a division in the LDU’s leadership. The party split into two factions: the original LDU group led by Chairman Kyar Khun Sar and a new LDU group led by General Secretary Kyar Solomon.

The original LDU group, led by Kyar Khun Sar, expelled three individuals—Kyar Solomon, Kyar Ya Kok, and Kyar Phu—and announced that they would pursue a resistance path.

The new LDU group led by Kyar Solomon remains a member of the 7 EAO Alliance and continues to engage with the military junta.

According to a message sent by the original LDU group to the KIO’s 63rd founding anniversary on 25 October 2023, the original LDU has abandoned the negotiation path with the junta and will stand with the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) until a future federal democracy is achieved. Kyar Har, the Vice Chairman of the original LDU, stated that it is important for all ethnic groups to be united. He believes that if all ethnic armed resistance organizations (EROs) have a common agreement and a single goal, they will definitely achieve victory through a united struggle.
