Since the military coup, the PNLO had engaged with the military junta until the end of 2023. However, they began to fight the military junta in January 2024. The PNLO announced that it would continue to advance with various ethnic armed resistance groups to end the military dictatorship and establish a federal democratic union. The military momentum of the PNLO and its allied forces was so strong that they were able to capture and control Hsihseng town, where they operate, on 28 January 2024.

At the emergency meeting of the PNLO/PNLA on 11-12 October 2024, Patron Colonel Khun Okkar, Joint General Secretary (1) Colonel Khun Min Thein, and Joint General Secretary (2) Nang Yin Yin Soe were all expelled from the organization and had their titles and duties revoked. Thus, Colonel Khun Okkar and the others who were expelled are no longer affiliated with the PNLO/PNLA.

Colonel Khun Okkar himself announced on 15 September 2024, that he had resigned from the organization and announced on 9 October 2024, the formation of the PNLO-NCA-S. This new group continues to adhere to the NCA and remains a member of the 7 EAO Alliance. The PNLO has protested against the PNLO-NCA-S, stating that it is an illegitimate organization that is misusing the organization’s name.

Although the current PNLO/PNLA, led by Chairman Khun Thurein, has had to relinquish control of Hsihseng town, which they had captured from the military junta, they continue to cooperate with other resistance forces and are engaged in political and military coordination. In particular, they are cooperating with the Pa-O National Federal Council (PNFC) led by Khun Myint Tun.
