The 16 Days of Activism against Violence against Women is being organized by Women Generation and is running from 25 November to 10 December in an Arakan Army-controlled liberated area of Arakan.
On 26 November, the group released photos along with a statement confirming the activities.
Participants in the campaign include young Arakanese women as well as some Muslim women.
The statement from Women Generation reads:
“Friends, colleagues, brothers and sisters, partner organizations — starting from today, we urge everyone to stop gender-based violence, to prevent and protect against it, and to promote mutual respect, empathy, and compassion among one another every day. From harmonious family life to the development and progress of entire communities and regions, let us all work together to make this happen.”
The campaign includes awareness-raising talks encouraging women (regardless of age) to speak out and oppose violence if they experience it, to protect one another, and to stand united as women.
Women Generation has been consistently working to reduce and eliminate gender-based violence.
They vow to continue to do so with full effort as long as gender-based discrimination, exclusion, and violence persist.
25 November is recognized as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
This date commemorates 25 November 1960, when three sisters who were political activists fighting against dictatorship and advocating for human rights and democracy in the Dominican Republic, were assassinated.
The global community designated this day as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women in their memory.
