The Karenni State Police (KSP) has reported that drug-related cases constitute the highest number of criminal offenses among all arrests made in Karenni (Kayah) State.

Among the criminal cases handled, which include drug offenses, homicide, theft, robbery, acts to cause dissension (causing division and instigation), and prisoners of war, drug seizures topped the list with 75 cases, according to the KSP.

KSP Deputy Police Chief-2 Ko Bo Bo said: “The drug problem in Karenni State has been a major issue since the military council’s administration. Now during this revolutionary period, the situation has gotten even worse as people are taking advantage of the circumstances.”

The KSP, established during the interim revolutionary period, is actively working to control drug-related issues, Deputy Police Chief Ko Bo Bo added.

According to the Karenni State Police (KSP), 149 criminal cases were arrested and prosecuted in Karenni State in 2024.

KSP judicial department officials said that drug cases are punishable by a minimum of 1 year in prison, up to 10 years depending on the severity of the crime, and that the arrested suspects are detained in accordance with human rights standards and prosecuted only after evidence is gathered.

Meanwhile, the KSP conducts drug awareness talks at their 14 KSP stations and internally displaced persons’ schools, while also conducting surprise inspections and arrests at checkpoints and controlled territories, said Ko Bo Bo.

“Drugs are a very dangerous issue for the public. That is why we have to deal with this drug as our main problem and take effective and serious measures to eradicate it,” he said.
In Karenni State in 2024, the second most common cases involved prisoners of war and those creating dissension captured on the frontlines, which are currently being prosecuted under the Counter-Terrorism Law.

In addition, judge U Saw Dae said that the KSP has prosecuted six prisoners of war captured during the battle in Pinlaung Township southern Shan State under Section 50(a) of the Counter-Terrorism Law.

The KSP has expanded from its capacity of 9 police stations and over 10 police outposts in 2023 to 14 stations and 18 outposts currently. With 638 personnel, they are maintaining law and order within their controlled territories.
