On 6 August, the Three Brotherhood Alliance (3BHA) requested China to stop the airstrikes by the military council forces without fighting in the areas controlled by the 3BHA in northern Shan State.

In its statement, the 3BHA has urged all international communities, especially China, to intervene and halt the military council army’s war crimes against ethnic people.

U Than Soe Naing, a political analyst said, “Such a request is something that the 3BHA should do. The junta is bombing Laukkai in response to the Lashio battle. The junta is conducting airstrikes on the public. Now that they are attacking without any military conflict, it is also dangerous for China.”

U Than Soe Naing added that China should try to stop the military council’s violence instead of urging EROs unilaterally prevent and stop armed conflicts in Myanmar and blaming them.

“During Operation 1027, China was able to solve online scams (Kyar Phyant) on the border. China is willing to re-open the border trade route through northern Shan State,” U Than Soe Naing said.

“The flow of trade on the Muse-Mandalay route depends on the fact that who can continue to control Mandalay. If the EROs can control Mandalay, the Muse-Mandalay route can resume the flow of goods,” said U Than Soe Naing.

From 14 July to the first week of August, the military council bombed Laukkai town under the control of Kokang-MNDAA at least four times, killing nearly 20 civilians, according to local residents.

Similarly, when, the military council bombed the markets in Theinni and Kutkai when they were crowded, killing more than 10 civilians and injuring at least 30 others, local residents said.

The military council’s bombardment with jet fighters on public buildings and the civilian population markets, schools and hospitals, is blatantly committing serious war crimes, the 3BHA said.

Shan political researcher Sai Wansai said: “China can urge the military council to cease bombing the towns, but it’s uncertain if the council will heed the request. The stalled Haigeng talk is likely to resume. It’s uncertain if the military council will attend. It seems likely the military might skip the discussion.”

On the other hand, Min Aung Hlaing, the leader of the military council, said in his speech on 5 August that China could be involved in the losses of territories in northern Shan State.

In his speech, Min Aung Hlaing said that it is necessary to investigate where funds and technology are being provided to establish weapons factories in EAOs-controlled areas on the Myanmar-China border.

In addition, the coup military council army, which is losing the war in northern Shan State, asked the people to protest against the MNDAA and the resistance forces, who have occupied the Lashio-based Northeast Military Command.

“The military council’s allegation of China’s involvement is not new. The military’s blaming the MNDAA amounts to blaming China. China wants to replace the military council with a new person. But when it didn’t happen, I saw that they were trying to overthrow Min Aung Hlaing somehow, said Sai Wansai.

He continued to say that he views the ongoing fighting between the TNLA and the MNDAA in northern Shan State as part of China’s plan to replace the military council.

Sai Wansai discussed the potential for China’s intervention, saying, “If Operation 1027 extends to the plains, China will have to deal with the EAOs and NUGs and make compromises. It’s clear that China’s interests extend beyond just Shan State, as its economic needs and national interests are linked to the entire country of Myanmar.”
