Most people face a shortage of food and livelihood difficulties as the military continues to close roads in Matupi Township of Chin State.
In Matupi Township where martial law is imposed, the military council has closed Matupi-Gangaw and Matupi-Mindat road, which connect to lower Myanmar, for months. As a result, the inflow of trucks has stopped. The public faces a shortage of food rations.
“The trucks are not allowed to enter. Due to the frequent bans, the region faces a shortage of foodstuffs. Foodstuffs are left stranded. There are no rations left when the situation returns to normal. Currently, we have to eat the remaining foodstuffs,” a local from Matupi said.
Due to the current situation, there is no rice left at the rice shops in Matupi. They have to mainly rely on the rice shipped from the village.
“I have heard the news that many trucks are leaving for Matupi. But the trucks have not arrived in town due to the ban by both sides. Trucks are stranded. We cannot buy a bag of rice worth MMK-30,000 even if we pay MMK-100,000 per rice bag,” a Matupi local said.
The authorities have phoned the Chin State Chief Minister to report the situation as the stoppage of trucks makes the public in Matupi more difficult.
The military council has not solved it despite a shortage of food rations including rice.
Due to this situation, the people who have rice brans and have kept rice stocks resell their rice to the public. Some people themselves have to buy rice from Phanaing village and other villages with the administrator’s recommendation letter.
The public in Matupi has to rely mainly on landline phones as mobile phones and internet are cut off till date.
