Junta provides militia training for women in some Myingyan District’s townships

The military junta has begun training women for militia forces in some townships within Myingyan District, Mandalay Region, according to local military observers.

The training, which has been ongoing since early March, is taking place in Myingyan, Saw, Taungtha, and Natogyi Townships under the leadership of militia leader Daw Thida Yu Mon, who operates under the military junta.

An activist from Saw Township said: “In Saw, they’re mainly training girls in the Si Mee area. Many have joined. If there are about ten people from each village, their force numbers should be around 200.”

According to sources, Daw Thida Yu Mon is recruiting by claiming that joining her militia training will provide exemption from the soon-to-be-implemented women’s conscription law.

Military observers note that while Daw Thida Yu Mon’s militia force previously numbered only around 700 during earlier implementations of the conscription law, her current recruiting efforts have increased her combined male and female forces to over 1,000.

A woman from the region who is eligible for military service explained: “They offer incentives. For some people who don’t understand politics, having a job during these times isn’t bad. The military is sponsoring them. They also do their own fundraising online.”

According to military sources, Daw Thida Yu Mon received additional weapons from Central Command’s Commander Brig-Gen Kyaw Ko Htike in November. Her forces now reportedly have access to modern weapons and jammers.

Currently, each member of her force reportedly receives a civil service salary and support supplies, and family members of militia personnel also receive assistance.

The Myingyan militia force controls over an area within approximately one mile east of the town of Myingyan. They have no exit route toward Natogyi and can no longer advance toward Taungtha, resulting in a military stalemate.
