Since the coup, the number of civilians killed in the military council’s airstrikes and shelling in Kachin State has reached 560.
Over the course of four years, the total number of civilians killed by airstrikes, fighting, and shelling across Myanmar has reached 7,757, with Kachin State accounting for 560 of these deaths, according to data from Myanmar Peace Monitor (MPM).
According to this data, Kachin State experienced the highest number of civilian deaths in 2024, during the four-year period, said MPM Coordinator Ko Hnin Ko Oo.
“The number of civilians killed in fighting in 2024 is higher than in previous years. The number of civilian deaths has nearly doubled. According to the data, the number of civilian deaths varies each year. In 2024, there were 171 civilian deaths,” Coordinator Ko Hnin Ko Oo explained about civilian deaths in Kachin State.
The number of civilians killed in the fighting in Kachin State reached 405 over the course of four years, with 2024 recording the highest number.
In addition, there were 149 civilian deaths due to airstrikes in total—83 in 2022, 32 in 2023, and 34 in 2024.
During the four years since the coup, 560 civilians have been killed in the junta’s airstrikes and fighting, with the majority being children, elderly individuals, and women.
After the military coup in 2021, there was some fighting in Kachin State, but it is known that there were very few civilian deaths due to the fighting.
Myanmar Peace Monitor (MPM) says it collects data from news media and statements issued by local community organizations.
Since 21 July 2024, the junta has cut off phone and internet lines across all of Kachin State. Due to these communication difficulties, the media has struggled to gather detailed figures on civilian deaths caused by battles and airstrikes.
Due to that situation, the number of civilians killed in the junta’s airstrikes, battles, and shelling in 2024 may differ from the actual figures on the ground, according to MPM officials.
During the four years of the coup, the junta’s aerial bombings on A Nang Pa, which is part of KIO’s Brigade-9 in Hpakant, the Munglai Hkyet IDP camp near the KIO Headquarters in Laiza, as well as Myo Thit and Kone Law villages in Kachin State, killed many people.
