The military burned down more than 1,000 houses in 16 villages in Kani Township of Sagaing Region in a week, Kani Township MP U Tun Tun Win said.
“The military burned down Nyaungwin village yesterday. I don’t exactly know whether the military burned down the monastery built with teak in the time of the King Mindon, in Nyaungwin village. I lost contact with locals as the phone line was cut off,” he said.
During this week, the military burned down Kinouksu, upper kin, Chantharsu in Bonemasu village-tract, Natgyi, Wetchaunggyi, Ywathar, Wetchaunglay, Kaedaung, Kintaung, Thatyettaw, Sinsan, Kanae, Kyunphyar, Seinkone, Letpansu and Nyaungwin villages.
Since before the formation of the National Unity Government (NUG) after the coup, the locals in Kani Township have been making armed resistance against the military council with Tumi. There are frequent fighting in Kani Township.
“There was a clash this morning. But it was not intense fighting. Recently, there was intense fighting. The military suffered casualties. Our side did not suffer casualties. Despite arsons, the People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) have controlled most of the areas in Kani Township, he added.
Since the coup till date, the military has burned down more than 20 villages and more than 2,000 houses in Kani Township. There are nearly 20,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Kani Township, U Tun Tun Win said.
According to the 2014 census, Kani Township has 45 village-tracts, 29,223 households and 134,541 populations.
According to the report by the Data for Myanmar, the military council troops burned down 7,503 houses in Sagaing Region from February 1st, 2021 till April, 2022.
