The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) not only signed new agreements with the military council but their representatives also presented their credentials in NayPyiTaw in August and September 2022.
The military council is using this as a propaganda tool to legitimize itself on the world stage. Since February 1st, 2021, the people of Myanmar have expressed their opposition to the military’s attempted coup in a variety of ways. UN agencies’ cooperation with the junta in distributing foreign aid intended for Myanmar people has raised many questions among the people of Myanmar who are are defying the military coup. BNI-Myanmar Peace Monitor’s weekly news review this week highlights the fact that tens of thousands of IDPs displaced following the coup have yet to receive aid from the United Nations.
