Urgent aid needed for over 10,000 IDPs in Tanintharyi

Over 10,000 residents from 10 villages in Tanintharyi Township, Tanintharyi Region, have been displaced due to the junta’s aerial bombings and ongoing clashes between two armed groups, and are in urgent need of emergency assistance, according to the Seven Stars IDP aid group.

Since the third week of December last year, a large military column has been conducting raids in an effort to take control of the villages and the No. 8 Union Highway section in Tanintharyi Township.

The ongoing fighting between the two armed forces, coupled with the advance of the junta column, has forced locals from numerous villages in Tanintharyi Township to flee for months.

An official from the Seven Stars IDP aid group reported that, due to the junta’s airstrikes and ongoing fighting, over 10,000 locals from ten villages, including Thein Khun, Chaung Hnit Pauk, Tha Bawt Lake Nge, Htonmakhar, and Nyaung Pin Kwin, are currently seeking shelter in forests and plantations.

The official stated, “Locals from Thein Khun and Chaung Hnit Pauk villages have been displaced for over two months. Most of the displaced people are seeking refuge in nearby villages, forests, and plantations. They are in urgent need of food, medicine, and shelter.”

The Seven Stars IDP aid group stated that the military council has intensified its offensives in Tanintharyi Township, making the situation the most severe it has been in the four years since the coup. They warned that the fighting is likely to escalate further in the future.

Additionally, with nearly all areas in Tanintharyi Township potentially becoming battlefields, over 50 villages in the township have been displaced.

In recent days, 37 houses were destroyed following aerial bombings by the military council on Htonmakhar and Nyaung Pin Kwin villages.
