Junta soldiers shot and killed five people from a group presumed to be Rohingya who had arrived by boat at a beach between Kawt Dut and Thaung Pyin villages in the northern part of Ye Township, Mon State, according to local sources.

On 12 February (the full moon day of Tabodwe), a boat carrying at least ten men and women, also believed to be Rohingya, arrived at the Kawt Dut-Thaung Pyin beach area. The junta soldiers patrolling the vicinity pursued and arrested them, said a local from Ye.

During the pursuit, five men who jumped into the sea to escape were shot dead by the junta soldiers, while the remaining group of at least ten people was detained and taken away, according to a man from Ye.

“They stood somewhere at the beach after they arrived by boat. When the junta soldiers got word of it, they went down there. When the group saw the soldiers, they ran. Those who fled were shot dead, and those who didn’t were captured. People sneaking in like this get caught quite often,” he explained.

The junta soldiers did not collect the bodies of the five men they had killed, and on 14 February, residents discovered the remains at a spot along the beach, according to a woman from Ye.

“The locals must have reported the bodies to the Ye District authorities, because officials came down. I heard they buried the bodies right there,” she said.

It is speculated among locals that this group, presumed to be Rohingya, had traveled from Arakan State via sea routes to Ye Township, intending to reach Thailand through the Hpa Yar Thone Su area to seek work.

Since the military coup, similar groups have frequently entered the northern Ye coastal area, reportedly connected to brokers in neighboring countries to facilitate their movement.

According to reports, they have to pay brokers between 400,000 and 800,000 kyats per person to travel by sea from Arakan State to Mon State. The junta soldiers also frequently arrest such groups.

Currently, in Hpa Yar Thone Su town, security on the Thai side has tightened due to Chinese online gambling operations, and electricity has been cut off.

Despite this, migrant workers attempting to illegally cross the border continue to gather in the area, according to local sources within the town.
