The people should pay attention to the military council which committed the massacre of around 100 locals who died in the junta airstrike in Pazigyi village in Kanbalu Township of Sagaing Region on 11 April, said U Nay Phone Latt, Spokesperson of the National Unity Government (NUG).

Around 100 locals including at least 18 children died as the military council conducted airstrikes more than five times at a public gathering at the opening ceremony of an office in Pazigyi village on the morning of 11 April, according to local ground news sources.

The mass killing occurred as the military council got the exact information about the public gathering at the opening ceremony of the public administrative body under the NUG.

Regarding the widespread criticism by the pro-military media outlets and among the public, U Nay Phone Latt told the Karen Information Center (KIC): “Public gathering may be a donation ceremony. I want the public to pay attention only to the military council which committed the intentional attack on the civilians. I don’t know why the people highlight the news that blames the victims. The people are not the military target. This is not the military training ground. The military council committed it on purpose.”

On 11 April, the NUG posted on its facebook saying that it carried out the collection of ground information, rescue operations in cooperation with local organizations and informing international organizations and diplomats about the massacre. Effective and stern actions will be taken against the military council’s crimes.

“Our Health Ministry sent the medical teams to the incident for the collection of scattered dead bodies and cremation and treatments of the wounded,” U Nay Phone Latt said.

During the rescue operation, the military council again conducted airstrikes on the evening of April 11. The rescue operation was suspended. Till this morning, the junta’s jet fighters are flying, according to local media.

The statement by Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson was posted on the U.S. Embassy Rangoon Facebook saying that the United States will continue to work with the international community to hold the regime accountable for violations and abuses committed in Myanmar.
