The construction site of the new Dawei prison, which is being built near Zeekya Village in Dawei Township of Tanintharyi Region, was destroyed by fire and six workers were also arrested.

At around 9 am on 3 December, nearly 50 members of an armed force arrived at the new Dawei prison construction project and torched it, local residents said.

The arson attack destroyed a temporary workers’ dormitory and a backhoe. The armed force abducted six workers including a leader, according to locals.

According to local residents, the armed groups warned them not to continue with the construction of the new prison and told the remaining workers to return home.

When the Than Lwin Times contacted the local defense forces about the incident, they said that the incident was true and that the relevant groups would issue a report.

On 30 September, the Dawei Guerrilla Revolutionary Force (DGRF) arrested two prison staff who came to cut fire wood near the project site and five prisoners and assassinated two prison staff, according to the DGRF’s statement.

The military council is building the new Dawei prison, using a budget of more than 10 billion kyats in 2023-2024 fiscal year.

According to the statement by the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), the military council has arrested nearly 2,000 civilians in Tanintharyi Region since the coup. Most of the detainees are inside Dawei prison.
