The majority of residents who fled after the military council troops’ arson attack on Nyawpyin and Aukkyaukwut villages in Launglon Township, Tanintharyi Region, still dare not return to their homes, displaced residents told Than Lwin Times.
A column of more than 110 junta troops had entered the two villages on 21 March, setting fire to houses and shooting dead a young man in Nyawpyin village, forcing more than 1,000 people to seek safety in nearby forests and fields.
A local resident said that displaced residents were reluctant to return for fear that regime troops would re-enter their villages.
Currently, the displaced residents are facing difficulties because they lost their houses and stored food, including rice, in the arson attacks.
Military council troops are reportedly still stationed as ambush patrols near Kamyawkin Bridge, although they have left Launglon Township.
According to a statement released in early March by Southern Monitor, an independent research group, more than 30,000 people have been displaced in the Tanintharyi Region since the military coup.
