Local residents say that more than 150 people have been arrested in Salin Township in Magway Region, under the pretext of military service.
According to local residents, sale staff from the shops were among those arrested. So, only a very few people go outside.
“They keep arresting people. They also arrest even those who are resting at home due to illness. Among those arrested are staff from fuel stations and other workers,” a resident said.
In addition, on 5 September, following rumors that women would be arrested, all the shops in Salin Township closed, and the streets were completely deserted.
A local resident from Salin said: “They don’t wear uniforms or use military vehicles. Instead, they arrive in Oway taxis or sometimes three-wheeled vehicles, dressed in civilian clothes. They carry no visible weapons and only arrest people when they are close by.”
Residents said the military council demands between Ks-2 million and Ks-8 million for the release of detainees.
Residents are required to pay money at the Township Administration Office to secure the release of detainees. Those who cannot afford to pay are left in detention.
The military council has been arresting people in their homes within the wards of Salin Township. Families of some detainees are required to pay money at locations such as KTVs or beer stations (restaurants) to secure their release.
According to local residents, the military council has earmarked 300 men in Salin Township for military service.
