Mon, Karen and Dawei armed forces form alliance to accelerate military operations

Mon, Karen, and Dawei armed groups engaged in the Spring Revolution have formed a military alliance, according to a joint announcement made on 21 April.

The All Burma Students’ Democratic Front (ABDSF), Dawna Front, and the Mon, Karen, and Dawei armed groups have united to form a military alliance, with the goal of enhancing military cooperation among the forces.

The alliance formed by these groups includes the Dawna Column (3) (Company 4, 6 and 7), Karen National Union (KNU) Brigade-6 Battalion-27, New Mon State Party (Anti-Military Dictatorship), Mon State Revolutionary Force (MSRF), ABSDF Battalion-1, and Dawei National Liberation Army (DNLA).

These groups have come together to strengthen military cooperation in their shared efforts.

The armed groups reached an agreement to form a military alliance after a meeting between their leaders on 17 April, solidifying their commitment to cooperate militarily.

Nai Nagar, Spokesperson of MSRF said: “Now that the New Mon State Party (AD) has withdrawn and joined, we have reached an agreement to continue our discussions and cooperation. The significant point here is that the Brigade-6, Battalion-27 of the KNU also joined the alliance. We have occasionally conducted joint military operations with Battalion-27 in the past. So, we can easily and successfully fight the common enemy through cooperation. This alliance has been formed with that goal in mind.”

A common agreement is being established between the Mon, Karen forces, and People’s Defense Forces (PDFs) to ensure successful military operations.

This agreement includes measures for reciprocal checks and balances, as well as the mutual provision of necessary assistance.

The aim of the alliance is to effectively disrupt the military columns entering Yephyu Township, located on the border of Mon State and Tanintharyi Region.

Nai Naga stated that the junta forces have been escalating their military activities and launching operations around Yephyu Township during this year’s dry season.

Nai Naga said: “Two military columns, made up of three or four enemy battalions, are active around Min Thar village, where the Mawrawaddy Naval Base Camp is located. Large warships are also moving swiftly from the sea to support the movements of their troops. This activity is concentrated in Yephyu Township, particularly around the Mawrawaddy Naval Base Camp.”

On 20 April, a clash broke out between the joint resistance forces and junta troops in Min Thar village, Yebyu Township, where the resistance forces are actively operating.

The resistance forces view the military council’s intensified operations as an attempt to regain control of the No.8 Union Highway along the Ye-Dawei road section.

On the other hand, Nai Naga pointed out that the deployment of ground, sea, and air forces in Yebyu Township is aimed at swiftly advancing the Dawei Special Economic Zone project, which has been agreed upon between Russia and the military council.

In the Dawei Special Economic Zone project, nine investment-related agreements were signed between the military council and the Russian government in February of this year.

These agreements include the construction of a deep-sea port and an oil refinery.
