More than 300 people from some villages have fled to safer places as Border Guard Police Battalion-5 based in Maungdaw of Arakan State threatened to fire heavy shells within one hour.
The displaced people are from Bawdikone, Shweyinaye and Kantharyar villages close to Bawdikone outpost in southern Maungdaw Township, which was captured by the Arakan Army (AA).
A local man from Shweyinaye village said: “Border Guard Force-5 Battalion in Maungdaw threatened to fire heavy shells at around 1 pm on 5 December. Villagers fled when they heard the news that the army would fire heavy weapons. This means expelling the villagers.”
A young woman from Shweyinaye village said: ÒThe entire village is fleeing to safety. Yesterday, the army fired heavy shells. The entire village is fleeing to safety as we have heard that the army fires heavy weapons again today.”
At around 8 pm on 4 December, the heavy shell fired by Border Guard Police Battalion-5 in Maungdaw wounded four people including a pregnant woman from Shweyinaye village, according to locals.
