Myanmar Army troops beat and interrogated around 20 residents of Maung Mei Shaung village on the Yangon-Dawei road in Dawei Township, Tanintharyi Region, after a military convoy was attacked with mines, according to local residents and People’s Defense Forces (PDFs).

“They entered the village after being attacked with mines. They forced about 20 people to kneel down, including children as young as two years old. They were beaten and interrogated, then they were all released. They also took motorcycles in their vehicle,” said the person in charge of the PDF-Launglon.

The PDFs attacked the 100-strong military junta convoy with mines as it was travelling from Maung Mei Shaung village to Za Har village on 18 January.

After the attack, the junta troops entered Maung Mei Shaung and beat and interrogated about 20 villagers. They also took motorcycles and mobile phones from the villagers, the PDF official added.

All the residents have been released, but they are concerned that the military council troops might return.

Since November last year, Myanmar Army columns and convoys have frequently carried out area clearance in Maung Mei Shaung and surrounding areas, according to locals.
