The Karen Nationalities Defense Force (KNDF) has established a gender equality department within its battalions to ensure gender equality and strengthen women’s leadership, according to the deputy head of the department.

After more than two months of preparation, the department was officially established on 15 December, with the aim of promoting equality for women and gender-diverse members throughout the entire KNDF, the deputy head explained.

“Our goal is to firmly integrate gender equality into KNDF policies, military acts, operations, and departmental management. We aim to incorporate gender perspectives in all ongoing processes and ensure that women’s leadership is meaningful and strong, not just a token effort,” the deputy head said.

He further added, “Beyond the traditional binary view of gender, we also recognize and support individuals within KNDF who identify with diverse gender identities.”
On 15 December, an official ceremony was held to appoint head of department, deputy head of department, and persons in charge for the gender equality department and central health department, the KNDF stated.

Accoriding to the statement, while fighting for democracy and towards the end of dictatorship, the KNDF aims to to work to create an inclusive organization that eliminates discrimination and allows for comprehensive participation.

In addition to the gender equality department, the KNDF has also established departments for health, central logistics, research and development, political affairs, and information.
