Karenni Army (KA) seized control of the military council’s Point-5416 (Military Operation Base Camp) Taung Katoon Camp on the Thai-Karenni (Kayah) border on the morning of 13 February, confirmed the KA Military Chief.
On 12 February, the KA launched an offensive against the junta using shelling and drones. In response, the military council provided aerial support.
There may be around 40 junta soldiers in the camp, said KA Military Chief Colonel Phone Naing.
“Our troops conducted clearance operations against the camp and then took control of the area. In the past, we installed control machines at the camp. We carried out drone attacks and shelling. They withdrew because they were unable to resist. This is the last camp on the border,” said Colonel Phone Naing.
The military council may suffer heavy causalities. The KA seized some ammunition and vehicles, according to the KA.
Taung Katoon Camp is a hilltop camp where the KA was previously stationed. It has been more than 30 years since the military council took control of the camp, said Colonel Phone Naing.
“We aim to capture the entire state. Our plan is to drive out the military council from all of Karenni State,” said Colonel Phone Naing.
The KA stated that some of the withdrawing junta soldiers fled to the Loi Sam Mon camp on the Thai-Shan border, which borders Karenni State.
On 28 December, the KA attacked the junta’s Mae La Yu camp in Hso Ta Shar Township (on Thai-Karenni Border).
Junta soldiers from Infantry Battalion-134 withdrew from the camp and then joined force with the now-captured Taung Katoon Camp.
