In July, a total of 75,000 locals were displaced by artillery shelling in Karen State, Mon State and Tanintharyi Region, according to the Human Rights Foundation of Monland (HURFOM).

The military council’s shelling destroyed over 120 houses, HURFOM says.

Nai Aue Mon, an official of HURFOM, said: “In just one month, 75,000 people have been displaced in Karen State, Mon State, and Tanintharyi Region.”

The military council’s indiscriminate shelling destroyed over 120 houses in Yebyu Township and east Dawei in Tanintharyi Region, Kyainseikgyi Township and Kawkareik Township in Karen State and Bilin, Kyaikto and Ye Townships in Mon State, the HURFOM says.

Regarding the destruction of houses, Nai Aue Mon, an official of HURFOM, said, “The military council’s indiscriminate shelling has targeted civilian areas, burning down civilian homes. Some houses have been partly destroyed, while others have been completely destroyed or reduced to ashes. These figures include all such cases of damage.”

In addition to destroying houses, the military council’s shelling of wards and villages has forced some people in Mon State, Karen State, and Tanintharyi Region to seek refuge in areas controlled by EROs.

Nai Aue Mon, an official of HURFOM, added that the displaced people are taking refuge in areas controlled by the New Mon State Party and the EROs in Karen and Mon States, as well as in areas controlled by the PDFs under the NUG in Dawei.

He said, “Some internally displaced persons (IDPs) had to flee the conflict so quickly that they could only take the clothes on their backs. Many couldn’t carry any rations, even a single pyi of rice. The IDPs are facing severe difficulties.”

A total of 75,000 IDPs from Karen State, Mon State and Tanintharyi Region are in need of rations, shelters and health care, according to the HURFOM.
