Four civilians were injured when Myanmar army soldiers stationed near the Yattawmu Pagoda Junction on the west bank of Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region fired shots, locals report.
Locals said that the civilians were hit when the junta soldiers fired at a detained resident attempting to escape.
The shooting injured a woman named Ma Thwe Thwe Win who came to pick up her schoolchild, a shopkeeper named Ma Nandar, and two other local residents. Two seriously injured women were being treated at Dawei General Hospital.
Myanmar army troops entered villages in the Dawei Special Economic Zone such as Le Shaung, Hteingyi, Khamaungchaung, Aye Ka Ni, Wa Zwan Taw, Yange and Konetharyar on 8 August and have since taken positions in the villages, according to local residents.
The army’s advance has displaced some 4,000 villagers, according to locals.
“No one dares to go near the village anymore. Some have fled to the town. Those who have no connections in the town are staying in makeshift tents in plantations and forests four or five miles from the village. Some families of four or five are huddling in huts on their land,” said a displaced resident of Aye Ka Ni village.
Locals report that advancing military council troops have not only arrested locals, but also set fire to and ransacked houses in the villages.
