Junta conducts raids with over 900 soldiers near Dawei SEZ

The military junta has launched an offensive with more than 900 soldiers into villages surrounding the Dawei Special Economic Zone in Yebyu Township, Tanintharyi Region, according to locals and resistance groups.

Since 29 March, junta troops have advanced into the area, with over 500 soldiers entering Sa Khan Gyi village near the Dawei Special Economic Zone, while approximately 100 soldiers have been stationed around Maung Ma Kan village.

Similarly, on 31 March, over 300 military personnel moved from Kan Pauk village toward Zar Di village, heightening tensions with local resistance groups, sources report.

An official from a local defense force said: “The junta troop movements could be aimed at clearing the territory around the Dawei Special Economic Zone.”

Due to this military offensive, concerns are growing over the potential for large-scale clashes in areas such as Pa Ya, Khway Ma Hpaw, Zar Di, Khaung Pyan, Daik Ta Kaw, Kha Yin Chaung, and Na Bu Lel. As a result, thousands of residents have been forced to flee their homes.

According to locals, phone lines and internet access have also been cut off in the areas where the junta troops have advanced.

On 24 and 25 March, fighting broke out near Le Shaung village close to the Dawei Special Economic Zone, resulting in casualties on both sides.

According to resistance groups in the region, the military junta’s intensified offensives, involving significant troop deployments, may be linked to Russia’s agreement to invest in the Dawei Special Economic Zone.

They claim the military is attempting to suppress local People’s Defense Forces in the area with overwhelming force.
